Some troops have experienced Leishmaniasis
Here is a summary of what it is, taken from
"McGill - Health Resource For International Travelers"
http://sprojects.mmi.mcgill.ca/tropmed/default.htm

Leishmaniasis is caused by a parasite transmitted by sand flies
The disease can have two forms, skin lesions and ulcers or a systemic illness with persistant fevers and spleen enlargement.  Cases occur in tropical and subtropical areas of the world.  Preventive measures are aimed at reducing contact with sand flies.  No vaccine exists for leishmaniasis.
